Success is up to you!

Picture
Welcome to my class! I hope we have a lot of fun learning about Medieval World and Pacific Northwest History. You will have challenges, but by working to conquer them you will learn the skills to be successful not just in my class, but in high school and beyond.
Just so you know, from 4th grade until college, I was not the best student, so I understand how difficult school can be. However, one thing I learned was that the world was not going to change for me. If I wanted to be successful, I had to be the one to make it happen.! The choices you make dictate the life you'll lead; not just in my class, but in life. Focus during class, get your homework in on time...to the best of your ability, ask questions and come see me for help if you need. I will do everything in my power to help you be successful. Remember I'm not a mind reader, so make sure you let me know if and how I can help you!

A bit about me

When I was your age school, was not the place for me! Where I really wanted to be was on my grandfather's farm on the tractor, combine, in trucks, playing baseball, or (my favorite) riding my horse with my .22 rifle by my side. School was torture! I was a poor reader, shy and  simply wasn't successful! By 7th grade I didn't think...I KNEW I was stupid. It wasn't until 9th grade, when a Pitbull of a teacher, named Mrs. Wills, sunk her teeth into me that I realized I needed to work smarter AND harder in order to catch up. I could do it, but I had to WANT it enough to work for it. For the first time I felt successful doing something other than physical activities! However, reading was just plain HARD! As a senior in high school a "new" learning disability became known as dyslexia...difficulty in reading. My brother's both had it, and so did I. There was no help set up yet for high school seniors, so as a freshman in college I taught myself to read. It was hard because I had to learn while reading college textbooks, but I did it. An amazing thing happened too: as I got better at reading, higher grades were more easily achieved and I started thinking that I was smarter than I had thought! I now have a bachelor's degree in both Speech Pathology and Audiology and Education. I also have a Master's degree in Education with an emphasis in technology.

I have been married 33 years to my college sweetheart and have two kids. My son, Ryan, is 30. He is an Army veteran and will graduate in May with his M.D. My daughter, Dea, 26, is a Lieutenant Navy nurse stationed in Afghanistan. I could talk about both my kids for hours as I am a very proud mother of 2 hardworking, patriotic young adults who are not only following their dreams and passions in life, but making this world a more positive place.

My goal is to help each of you become not just better students, but better people: a person who has the skills to succeed and have the will to get better.
